Every great brand begins with a dream — ours began with a man named Jeevan Jetha, whose name fittingly means Life. A man admired for his style, magnetic personality, and unwavering values, Jeevan’s vision was simple yet profound: to bring beauty, culture, and grace into everyday life through timeless fashion.
What began as a small family shop to provide for his loved ones soon grew into something far greater — a symbol of heritage, elegance, and the enduring art of Eastern fashion in South Africa.
This is the story of Jayshree’s / Rivaz — a brand woven from passion, perseverance, and generations of dedication.
From Humble Beginnings to a National Brand
In the early 1950s, Jeevan and his wife, Hemkoor, opened a modest store in Durban. They sold simple fabrics and household staples to support their family after he left the family business. Jeevan being the eldest of five sons was later joined by his sons in his business and their love for textiles and traditional attire soon blossomed into something remarkable.
With patience, wit, and entrepreneurial vision, Jeevan became one of South Africa’s most respected saree retailers. His shop was more than a business — it was a place of community, culture, and connection. His attention to detail, his eye for timeless fashion, and his love for people still inspire every thread we weave today.
Sadly at the age of 59 years in 1972 he called to rest survived by Hemkoor and his family.As the years passed, the Jeevan family, together with their dedicated team led by his elder son Krishnalal Jeevan and youngest son Himatlal Jeevan — many of whom remain part of our story — turned that humble store into a name synonymous with elegance, authenticity, and grace.
An Evolution in Fashion
When Jeevan’s granddaughter Usha stepped into the business, she brought new energy and creativity. Her passion for style and innovation led to the birth of Rivaz — a boutique concept introducing international trends, luxurious bridalwear, and modern Eastern couture to South Africa.
Usha’s legacy of vision, strength, and sophistication continues to guide us.
Through her influence, Jayshree’s Rivaz became not only a household name but a destination for women seeking individuality and timeless style.

Our Journey Through Time - Milestones That Shaped Us
1952
The Jeevan family opens their first shop on Umgeni Road, Durban — “Jeevan Stores”is born.
1956
A second store opens in Cross Street, Durban, marking the beginning of a growing legacy.
1961
Launch of Jayanthis, expanding the family’s reach into Eastern fashion.
1972
Rebranded under the name Jayshree’s, cementing our place in Durban’s retail landscape.
1987
Usha brought her creative flair and launches Rivaz, redefining boutique shopping with bridal and international trends.
1992
The Jayshree’s Rivaz Mega Store opens in Lenasia, Gauteng.
1996
Expansion continues — our Musgrave Centre store opens — connecting with a broader audience.
1997
Expansion continues — our Value Centre store opens
1999
Expansion continues — Chatsworth store opens in 1999 and is still open today.
2000 - 2002
Head Offices and warehouse move to Springfield Park, Durban. Cross Street branch relocates to The Crescent in Umhlanga. Annual national roadshows begin, taking Eastern fashion across South Africa.
2010
Launch of the Loyalty Programme, rewarding customers for their continued support.
2016
The Online Store (www.jayshrees.co.za) launches — a first in the local Eastern fashion industry.
2019
Proud sponsor of the beloved local film “The Kandasamys”.
2020 - 2021
We face the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and KZN riots, losing our flagship store — but never our spirit.
2022
The grand opening of our new Springfield store on Intersite Avenue, celebrating 70 years of heritage, resilience, and innovation.
